Hemlock Stair Parts are manufactured from a type of softwood timber. Softwood stair balustrade (such as hemlock and pine) are an excellent, affordably priced alternative to hardwood (oak) for finishing your staircase. This article looks at the reasons why Hemlock Stair Parts are a popular choice in the United Kingdom and a great option in 2021.
Please note, softwood and hardwood timber refer to how the trees reproduce, not the strength of the wood. Hardwood is not necessarily harder or stronger than softwood. However, most types of hardwood are typically denser than softwood and therefore stronger and more durable.
What Is Hemlock?
Hemlock is a softwood timber grown mainly in North America. It is pale brown in colour, non-resinous (not having resin), predominantly knot free and straight grained. Hemlock timber is suitable for stair parts, internal joinery, doors, screens, and feature work. Due to hemlock's uniform density it will absorb a stain easily and does not split or break when being worked with. Its less brittle profile makes it stronger than many hardwoods and is an ideal timber option if you wish to varnish or paint after installation.
FYI: Some people mix hemlock timber with the poisonous hemlock plant Conium maculatum. This is not the case.
