KwikStairs - The Basics
1) Measure the lower finished floor to upper finished floor where your stairs will eventually fit. In the unfortunate case you are not able to find your lower finished floor to higher finished floor measurement, please see the technical information area further down for more information and guidance
2) Use the tread guide below to work out the number of treads you will need for your new stairs (including nosing):
Finished Lower To Higher Floor Measurement | Number Of Treads (Including Nosing) |
1781-1980mm | 9 |
1981-2200mm | 10 |
2201-2420mm | 11 |
2421-2640mm | 12 |
2641-2860mm | 13 |
2861-3080mm | 14 (14 or more treads must include a winder box) |
3) The product images on this website are all based on a 13 tread staircase. Should your floor to floor measurement give a different number of treads, you'll need to adjust the measurements by 245mm per tread if you require more or less than 13
4) All width measurements are from the outside edge of each string
5) All length measurements are from the front face of the first riser to the trimmer or outside edge of the joining winder box, and outside edge of the winder box to the trimmer or outside edge of the joining winder box
6) You need to decide on the width of the staircase:
Options |
900mm (and less) for a KwikStairs straight flight |
Or 900mm, 850mm, 800mm, 750mm, 700mm, 650mm for any KwikStairs winding combination |
7) Measure the space available to you for where you would like your stairs
8) Decide on the style of staircase you would like (straight flight, single winder, double winder or 'S' winder)
9) Navigate to that section of the guide below
10) Look at all the styles and measurements for your chosen width of stairs
11) Is there a style that will fit the space available to you?

KwikStairs Straight Flight Guide
If you've decided on a straight flight set of KwikStairs for your home, please use the below guide to work out the width and length of your new stairs. Please be aware that when constructing straight flights only, KwikStairs can be made at any width up to 900mm wide. The below straight flight measurement key is based on a 13 tread staircase (floor to floor 2641-2860mm).
A Measurement (width of current stairs = horizontal dimension of new stairs) | B Measurement (width of current stairs = width of new stairs) |
900mm = 2950mm | 900mm = 900mm |
850mm = 2950mm | 850mm = 850mm |
800mm = 2950mm | 800mm = 800mm |
750mm = 2950mm | 750mm = 750mm |
700mm = 2950mm | 700mm = 700mm |
650mm = 2950mm | 650mm = 650mm |
So if you require a 900mm width staircase then: dimension A = 2950mm and dimension B = 900mm. To add or minus a tread, alter the above measurements by 245mm. Use the decision tree below to help you decide between all the different KwikStair product options:
KwikStairs Flat Quarter/Half Options

KwikStairs Right/Left Hand Winder Guide
If you've decided on a KwikStairs right/left hand winder and straight flight set for your home, please use the below guide to work out the width and length of your new stairs. Please be aware that when constructing straight flights only, KwikStairs can be made at any width up to 900mm wide. The below product images and measurement examples are based on a 13 tread staircase (floor to floor 2641-2860mm).
A Measurement (width of current stairs = horizontal dimension of new stairs) | B Measurement (width of current stairs = width of new stairs) |
900mm = 1912mm | 900mm = 2167mm |
850mm = 1862mm | 850mm = 2117mm |
800mm = 1812mm | 800mm = 2067mm |
750mm = 1762mm | 750mm = 2017mm |
700mm = 1712mm | 700mm = 1967mm |
650mm = 1662mm | 650mm = 1917mm |
So if you require a 900mm width staircase then: dimension A = 1912mm and dimension B = 2167mm. To add or minus a tread, alter the above measurements by 245mm. Use the decision tree below to help you decide between all the different KwikStair product options:
KwikStairs Right/Left Single Winder Combinations
All examples below are based on a 13 tread staircase. To add or minus a tread, please alter the appropriate measurement by 245mm.

KwikStairs Right/Left Hand Double Winder Guide
If you've decided on a KwikStairs right/left hand double winder and straight flight set for your home, please use the below guide to work out the width and length of your new stairs. Please be aware that when constructing straight flights only, KwikStairs can be made at any width up to 900mm wide. The below product images and measurement examples are based on a 13 tread staircase (floor to floor 2641-2860mm). We recommend that you look at the B measurement first as this descends in size.
A Measurement | B Measurement | C Measurement |
900mm = 1667mm | 900mm = 1864mm | 900mm = 1677mm |
850mm = 1617mm | 850mm = 1764mm | 850mm = 1627mm |
800mm = 1567mm | 800mm = 1664mm | 800mm = 1577mm |
750mm = 1517mm | 750mm = 1564mm | 750mm = 1527mm |
700mm = 1467mm | 700mm = 1464mm | 700mm = 1477mm |
650mm = 1417mm | 650mm = 1364mm | 650mm = 1427mm |
So if you require a 900mm width staircase then: dimension A = 1667mm, dimension B = 1864mm and dimension C = 1677mm. To add or minus a tread, alter the above measurements by 245mm.
KwikStairs Right/Left Double Winder Combinations
All examples below are based on a 13 tread staircase. To add or minus a tread, please alter the appropriate measurement by 245mm.

KwikStairs 'S' Winder Guide
If you've decided on a KwikStairs 'S' winder and straight flight set for your home, please use the below guide to work out the width and length of your new stairs.
900mm = 1912mm | 900mm = 1864mm | 900mm = 1432mm |
850mm = 1862mm | 850mm = 1764mm | 850mm = 1382mm |
800mm = 1812mm | 800mm = 1664mm | 800mm = 1332mm |
750mm = 1762mm | 750mm = 1564mm | 750mm = 1282mm |
700mm = 1712mm | 700mm = 1464mm | 700mm = 1232mm |
650mm = 1662mm | 650mm = 1364mm | 650mm = 1182mm |
So if you require a 900mm width staircase then: dimension A = 1912mm, dimension B = 1864mm and dimension C = 1432mm. To add or minus a tread, alter the above measurements by 245mm.
KwikStairs 'S' Winder Combinations
To find out more details about KwikStairs, please check out the official product brochure here.
This is the measurement needed for the height of your
existing staircase. From the finished surface of the floor
where the stair (lower floor) is to start to the finished
surface of the next floor where the stair is to end (upper
floor).
-USE THE TREAD CALCULATOR BELOW TO WORK OUT THE NUMBER OF TREADS YOU WILL NEED INCLUDING THE NOSING-
Finished Floor To Finished Floor Measurement | Number Of Treads (Including Nosing) |
1781mm - 1980mm | 9 |
1981mm - 2200mm | 10 |
2201mm - 2420mm | 11 |
2421mm - 2640mm | 12 |
2641mm - 2860mm | 13 |
2861mm - 3080mm | 14 |
Note: 14 or more treads must include a winder box
Look for your finished floor to finished floor measurement and the table above will advise you on how many treads your staircase will require including nosing. Should you not be able to find your finished floor to finished floor measurement from above, then please use the following calculation to obtain it:
Example: | ||
Finished floor to finished floor measurement in mm | = | 1590mm |
Divide by 220mm | = | 7.22 |
If a partial figure, please round up to the next whole figure | = | 8 |
Total number of treads including nosing | = | 8 |
-CALCULATE THE SPACE REQUIRED FOR YOUR STAIRCASE-
All calculations start from the lower floor and work
upwards.
GOING - The measurement between the front of the riser
on the lower tread to the front of the riser on the upper
tread (always 245mm).
TOP RISER - This is the very last top riser fitted on site that
the nosing sits on (always 10mm).
Every measurement length given is always to the front face
of the rise.
No allowance has been made for the small 20mm bull-nose
overhang on your bottom tread.
-WINDER BOX-
This can either be left hand or right hand in direction. The
kit comes in its largest form but is detailed to show six
standard widths. Each box is aesthetically designed so that
any adjoining straight flight meets the centre of the winder
box newel post. Therefore every winder box is 32mm larger
than the width of the adjoining straight flight.
Staircase Measurement | Winder Measurement | |
650mm wide staircase | = | 682mm x 682mm winder box size |
700mm wide staircase | = | 732mm x 732mm winder box size |
750mm wide staircase | = | 782mm x 782mm winder box size |
800mm wide staircase | = | 832mm x 832mm winder box size |
850mm wide staircase | = | 882mm x 882mm winder box size |
900mm wide staircase | = | 932mm x 932mm winder box size |
-CALCULATING A STRAIGHT FLIGHT-
Multiply the number of treads that you need by the going
(245mm). Add that to the nosing (10mm). This shows you
the total length of your straight flight staircase.
Example: | ||
Floor to floor | = | 2660mm |
Number of treads | = | 13 including nosing |
Depth of treads 245mm | = | 12 x 245 = 2940mm |
Depth of nosing riser 10mm | = | 1 x 10 = 10mm |
Total length of staircase | = | 2940mm + 10mm = 2950mm |
-CALCULATING A SINGLE WINDER-
Deduct the winder box treads (3) and the nosing (1) from your overall total treads required. This will then give you the remaining number of straight treads you require.
Multiply the number of straight treads that you require, if
any, before the winder box by the going (245mm).
Obtain your chosen winder box size from the
measurements listed in the winder box section.
Multiply the number of straight treads that you require, if
any, after the winder box by the going (245mm).
Add to this the nosing (10mm).
Example 1: | ||
Floor to floor | = | 2660mm |
Number of treads | = | 13 including nosing |
Tread 245mm | = | 4 x 245 = 980mm (4 treads) |
900mm wide winder | = | 932mm x 932mm (3 treads) |
Tread 245mm | = | 5 x 245mm = 1225mm (5 treads) |
Nosing riser 10mm | = | 1 x 10 = 10mm (1 tread) |
Length of staircase | = | 980mm + 932mm = 1912mm |
Length of staircase | = | 932mm + 1225mm +10mm = 2167mm |
To find out more details about KwikStairs, please check out the official product brochure here.
Example 1: | ||
Floor to floor | = | 2660mm |
Number of treads | = | 13 including nosing |
800mm wide winder | = | 832mm x 832mm (3 treads) |
Tread 245mm | = | 9 x 245mm = 2205mm (9 treads) |
Nosing riser 10mm | = | 1 x 10 = 10mm (1 tread) |
Length of staircase | = | 832mm = 832mm |
Length of staircase | = | 832mm + 2205mm + 10mm = 3047mm |
-CALCULATING A DOUBLE WINDER-
Deduct both the winder box treads (6) and the nosing (1) from your overall total treads required. This will then give you the remaining number of straight treads that you require. Multiply the number of straight treads that you require, if any, before the first winder box by the going (245mm).
Obtain your chosen winder box size from the
measurements listed in the winder box section.
Multiply the number of straight treads that you require, if
any, after the first winder box and before the second, by the
going (245mm).
Use again the same winder box size as above. Multiply the
number of straight treads that you require, if any, after the
second winder box, by the going (245mm).
Add to this the nosing (10mm).
Example 1: | ||
Floor to floor | = | 2660mm |
Number of treads | = | 13 including nosing |
Tread 245mm | = | 2 x 245mm = 490mm (2 treads) |
900mm wide winder | = | 932mm x 932mm (3 treads) |
Tread 245mm | = | 3 x 245mm = 735mm (3 treads) |
900mm wide winder | = | 932mm x 932mm (3 treads) |
Tread 245mm | = | 1 x 245mm = 245mm (1 tread) |
Nosing riser 10mm | = | 1 x 10 = 10mm (1 tread) |
Length of staircase | = | 490mm + 932mm = 1422mm |
Length of staircase | = | 932mm + 735mm + 932mm = 2599mm |
Length of staircase | = | 932mm + 245mm + 10mm = 1187mm |
-CALCULATING A DOUBLE WINDER-
Example 2: | ||
Floor to floor | = | 2660mm |
Number of treads | = | 13 including nosing |
Tread 245mm | = | 3 x 245mm = 735mm (3 treads) |
800mm wide winder | = | 832mm x 832mm (3 treads) |
800mm wide winder | = | 832mm x 832mm (3 treads) |
Tread 245mm | = | 3 x 245mm = 735mm (3 treads) |
Nosing riser 10mm | = | 1 x 10 = 10mm (1 tread) |
Length of staircase | = | 735mm + 832mm = 1567mm |
Length of staircase | = | 832mm + 832mm = 1664mm |
Length of staircase | = | 832mm + 735mm + 10mm = 1577mm |
-HEAD HEIGHT-
Your staircase must always have a clearance of 2 metres from the 'pitch line' as illustrated to the left. This makes an allowance for health and safety guidelines when ascending or descending the staircase.
